Scope of Practice Decision Making Guidelines

The safety and well-being of the client shall be the central focus of all nursing decisions. One of the most important actions a nurse can take toward that focus is making sure that only those roles, interventions or activities for which the nurse possesses the knowledge, technical skill, ability, ethical principle, and clinical reasoning to perform safely are performed.

The Scope of Practice Decision Making Guidelines have been developed by the Board to assist the individual nurse in making sound professional judgments about a nursing role, intervention or activity they may choose to undertake. Application of the Scope of Practice Decision Making Guidelines reinforces individual accountability in nursing practice decisions, communicates nursing scope of practice to other health care professionals, students, and policy makers, and promotes safe nursing practices.
